The climate of Esperanza (Antarctica)
The Argentine base Esperanza is located in Hope Bay on the Antarctic Peninsula. It is one of the two villages on Antarctica mainly inhabited by civilians. About ten families live here all year round. During the summer the villages are home to more people. Esperanza is also the biggest tourist attraction on Antarctica, every year about 1,100 tourists visit this place. The basis is famous because Emilio Palma was born here, this is the first person ever to be born on Antarctica. Despite its location on Antarctica Esperanza has a tundra climate instead of an ice climate. The climate type can only be classified as such because average temperatures in December and January are 1 degree Celsius (34 degrees Fahrenheit). Average temperatures are higher here than in the interior. This is mainly caused by its location on the Southern Ocean. Precipitation figures are higher here than in other places on this continent.

More climate information
Climate figures are very useful but don’t present a general impression of the climate and the eventual weather circumstances within a certain period. The figures don’t always reflect the chance of wintry weather, extreme heat or hurricanes. That is why we offer useful extra climate information for each month of the year:
