The climate of Punakha (Bhutan)
Punakha is located in the northern part of Bhutan at an altitude of 4,000 meters. Because of this altitude temperatures are much more pleasant than in other parts of Bhutan. The most important attraction of the city is the winter palace, Punakha Dzong which has been built on an island in the river. In 1970 the first king of Bhutan was crowned here. The city is situated in a fertile river valley. The city is surrounded by rice fields. Several National Parks can be found in the vicinity. Many colorful religious festivals are held here annually. Punakha has a cool China climate with warm and humid summers and cold winters. This unique type of climate only occurs at high altitudes at a relatively low degree of latitude.
