The climate of São Vicente (Cape Verde)
São Vicente is part of the windward or Barlavento islands of
Cape Verde. São Vicente is situated near the island of Santo Antão,
the two islands are only separated by the São Vicente canal. The
largest and most important city on the island is Mindelo. Smaller
popular cities are: São Pedro, Lazareto, Salamansa and Baia des Gates.
Just outside São Pedro the local airport is situated. The island has a
population of 75,000. The main source of income is the big seaport.
Other sources of income are tourism, agriculture and fishery. The
highest point on the island is Mount Verde with its peak at 774
São Vicente has a tropical savannah climate with low
precipitation figures all year round. Temperatures are pleasant all
year round, between 20-30 degrees Celsius. The climate is strongly
influenced by the Harmattan wind. This wind supplies dry and dusty air
from the Sahara.
