The climate of Yumen (China)
Yumen is located in the westerly province of Gansu. The city is known for its oil production. The largest attraction is the Yumen Pass. This valley used to form an important staging post on the Silk Route. At the beginning of the pass an entry gate can be found. The gates and the valley where an important area for trading and the defense of the empire. Yumen has a cold desert climate, type BwK according to the Köppen climate classification with cold and dry winters. Because of the drought and open plains it is also very windy. The Siberian winds cause extremely cold temperatures. Summers are cold and reasonably wet. During spring sandstorms may occur because of the drought.
