The climate of Manihiki (Cook Islands)
Manihiki is a triangular atoll consisting of 43 islands and part of the Cook Islands. Most of the 43 islands are uninhabited. The atoll is home to about 500 people who live divided over two villages. The atoll was discovered at the beginning of the 17th century by Europeans. However, it has had inhabitants since the 10th century. Although the Europeans gave several different names to the atoll the locals were able to keep the original name. Until 1980 Manihiki was part of the Guano Islands Act, a military claim by the United States of America. The atoll is known for its unique diving spots. Manihiki has a tropical rainforest climate. Because of its northerly location there is no risk of tropical storms and hurricanes here. Temperatures are much lower here than on the more southerly located islands. The Manihiki atoll has no distinct seasons, this is caused by its location close to the equator. Average annual precipitation figures are fairly high. The ever blowing trade winds offer cooling.

More climate information
Climate figures are very useful but don’t present a general impression of the climate and the eventual weather circumstances within a certain period. The figures don’t always reflect the chance of wintry weather, extreme heat or hurricanes. That is why we offer useful extra climate information for each month of the year:
