The climate of Kinshasa (Democratic Republic of the Congo)
Kinshasa is the largest city in and the capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo, also known as Congo Kinshasa and has a population of 10 million. During Belgian colonial times the city was known as Léopoldville or Leopoldstad in Flemish. The city was given this name as a tribute to the then Belgian King Leopold II. Kinshasa has an infamous past because of the violence that took place during the reign of the cruel dictator Mobutu Sese Seko from 1965 till 1997. Kinshasa has a tropical savannah climate with annual maximum temperatures around 30 degrees Celsius. Minimum temperatures within 24 hours are between 18-22 degrees Celsius. With almost 1,400 millimeters of annual precipitation (long term records) precipitation figures in the city on the Congo River are average for the country. The rainy season is from October till May. A striking detail is that the driest month is also the darkest month. June can only record 8 millimeters of precipitation and 120 hours of sunshine which is only 4 hours of sunshine per day.

More climate information
Climate figures are very useful but don’t present a general impression of the climate and the eventual weather circumstances within a certain period. The figures don’t always reflect the chance of wintry weather, extreme heat or hurricanes. That is why we offer useful extra climate information for each month of the year:
