The climate of Kolwezi (Democratic Republic of the Congo)
Kolwezi is located in the Katanga province and is situated higher on the Manika plateau. The city is well connected to other cities, for instance with Lubumbashi. Kolwezi is an important industrial center in the Democratic Republic of Congo and was founded for this sole purpose in 1937. The grounds here are very rich in minerals which are excavated in the copper and cobalt mines that can be found in the vicinity of the city. These mines consist of a large series of open craters where besides copper and cobalt other minerals are excavated as well. Because of this the city was an important strategic point in the conflicts that took place here over the past few decades. The city with its abundant resources was an important target for several armed militias. Kolwezi has a tropical savannah climate. Average temperatures are slightly lower here than in the rest of the country because the city is situated at a higher altitude. During the night temperatures may drop below 20 degrees Celsius. The rainy period is from November till April. During the rainy period temperatures are slightly lower than during the rest of the year.
