The climate of Mek’ele (Ethiopia)
Mek’ele lies in the north of Ethiopia not far away from the border with Eritrea. Mek’ele lies in the province of Tigray of which it is also the administrative capital. The town lies at an altitude of more than 2000 meters. It is an old town founded already in the 13th century. Nowadays mainly people of the Tigrinya people live there. In the town there is the castle of emperor Yohannes IV built in the 19th century.
Mek’ele has a warm steppe climate strongly influenced by its more elevated situation. Due to this more elevated situation the temperatures in Mek’ele are lower than one would expect in this part of the world. The months of July and August are by far the wettest here. Almost the entire yearly amount of precipitation falls during these months. During the winter period the nights can be fairly cold.
