The climate of Hesse (Germany)
The federal state of Hesse is located centrally in Germany. The largest cities in this federal state are: Frankfurt am Main, Kassel, Darmstadt and Offenbach am Main. The capital of Hesse is Wiesbaden. Besides large cities many small villages with timber frame houses are situated in the hills. This is also why the region is very popular among hikers and cyclists. The federal state is also known for the many spa’s which are situated throughout the region. Every 5 years the so called ‘Documenta’ is held in Kassel. This is one of the biggest temporary exhibitions of modern art. The largest city in Hesse is Frankfurt am Main which is also known as the ‘Manhattan of Europe’ because of the many skyscrapers which are situated in the city. Hesse has a moderate maritime climate. Precipitation figures are highest during the summer. During the winter when temperatures are below freezing point most precipitation falls in the form of sleet or snow. During the winter average temperatures are just above freezing point. In the higher situated regions temperatures are slightly lower which makes it possible to go on a winter sports holiday here.

More climate information
Climate figures are very useful but don’t present a general impression of the climate and the eventual weather circumstances within a certain period. The figures don’t always reflect the chance of wintry weather, extreme heat or hurricanes. That is why we offer useful extra climate information for each month of the year:
