The climate of Mérida (Mexico)
Mérida is the largest city and the capital of the federal state of Yucatan and is located at 25 kilometers from the Gulf of Mexico. Mérida is almost situated on the tropic of Cancer. Because Mérida is situated far from the east coast of Yucatan the easterly trade winds hardly influence the climate here. It is almost always warm to very warm here with annual maximum temperatures of 33 degrees Celsius. In the lower areas it may even be 1-2 degrees warmer. The monsoon is from June till October, during this period rainfall is often heavy and short lived. Mérida is situated in a region with a risk of hurricanes from June till December. However, because the city is situated in the interior hurricanes are often reduced to far less damaging tropical storms before hitting the city. The cathedral on Plaza Mayor is the oldest cathedral in North America. Mérida is a popular excursion among tourists who stay in one of the hotels on the coast of Yucatan. Tourists often make a two day excursion to the Maya city of Chichén Itzá and the cosy colonial center of Mérida.
