The climate of Hoorn (the Netherlands)
Hoorn is a large town and a municipality on the Markermeer (lake) in the province of North Holland. The city was founded in the 13th century and became an important port on the Zuiderzee (nowadays IJsselmeer, Lake IJssel). Nowadays the port is only used for pleasure cruises. The old city center of Hoorn is a conservation area. Among the most beautiful buildings in Hoorn are: the Oosterkerk (East church), the Noorderkerk (North church), the Oosterpoort (East Gate), the Westfries museum (West Frisian museum) and the Hoofdtoren (Main Tower). Several VOC (East India Company) buildings can still be admired in Hoorn. The most southern tip of South-America ‘Cape Hoorn’ was named after this town. Hoorn has a moderate sea climate influenced by the North Sea and the Markermeer. Summers are pleasantly warm with temperatures around 20 degrees Celsius on average. Winters are cold with temperatures just above freezing point. When the wind comes from the Markermeer during winter it may even feel colder.
