The climate of Vlieland (the Netherlands)
Vlieland is one of the seven West Frisian islands, it is the second island from the west in the chain. The largest village on the island is Oost-Vlieland which is several centuries old. During the time the Zuiderzee was used for merchant shipping Oost Vlieland benefited from its favourable situation. The village is located on the leeward side behind a large dune. Because of the many terraces and old fashioned houses Oost Vlieland has a charming character. Cars are prohibited on the island. You should leave your car in Harlingen. Because of this the island has kept its original charm and is an oasis of peace and quiet. Vlieland has a maritime climate. Because of its location the wind is stronger here than on the mainland. During the warmest days of the year it is far more pleasant to stay on the island than in other places on the mainland. The wind offers a pleasant cooling then. Clouds dissolve rapidly. This also causes low precipitation figures. During the winter it may be bleak on the West Frisian islands. Because the sea is still warm during autumn precipitation figures may be high during this period.

More climate information
Climate figures are very useful but don’t present a general impression of the climate and the eventual weather circumstances within a certain period. The figures don’t always reflect the chance of wintry weather, extreme heat or hurricanes. That is why we offer useful extra climate information for each month of the year:
