The climate of Volendam (the Netherlands)
Volendam is an old fishing village on the IJsselmeer (Lake IJssel). When the lake was still the Zuiderzee the main source of income was fishing. Nowadays tourism also plays an important role. The population makes an effort to retain their own authentic identity. The old wooden house fronts are well preserved. In the many souvenir shops you can have your picture taken wearing traditional attire. Volendam is a unique village with a close-knit community. Many artists were born here. Volendam even has its own sound: the paling sound (eel sound). Because Volendam is situated on Lake Ijssel fierce winds may blow during the autumn and winter. The air is warmed over the warm lake which causes rain to fall on the mainland. Summers are pleasant on the lake, the water is a good place to seek cooling. The best time to visit Volendam is during spring. Chances of sunny weather are high and mass tourism hasn’t arrived yet. However, a cold wind may blow from Lake Ijssel.
