The climate of Zwolle (the Netherlands)
Zwolle is located in the western part of the province of Overijssel of which it also is the capital. Zwolle is situated in the Salland region on the banks of the rivers Het Zwarte Water and the Overijsselse Vecht. Zwolle was founded during medieval times on a plateau in the marshlands between the IJssel and the Overijsselse Vecht. Several old defensive structures such as the Sassenpoort, Diezenpoort, Steenpoort (all gates) and parts of the old town wall can still be admired. One of the oldest buildings in Zwolle is the “Basiliek van Onze-Lieve-Vrouw-ten-Hemelopneming”, the Assumption of Our Lady basilica dating back to 1399. PEC Zwolle soccer club play their home matches in Zwolle. Zwolle has a moderate maritime climate strongly influenced by the North Sea and the warm Gulf Stream. During the winter longer periods with subzero temperatures (during the night) are not uncommon. During the winter daytime temperatures are just above freezing point on average. Zwolle is one of the driest cities in the Netherlands; precipitation is evenly spread out over the year.
