The climate of Bougainville (Papua New Guinea)
Bougainville is an autonomous region that is part of Papua New Guinea. These islands used to be known as the Northern Solomon Islands. The capital of this region is Buka, situated on the island of Buka. The largest island of this archipelago is Bougainville. Besides these two islands the Carteret Islands are also part of this autonomous region. The region has a population of almost 200,000. Prior to the independence of Bougainville there was a bloody civil war in Papua New Guinea. More than 20,000 people lost their lives in this battle. The largest city in this archipelago is Arawa, which will probably take over the role as capital in the future. Bougainville has a tropical rainforest climate with precipitation all year round. Because of high precipitation figures in combination with high temperatures humidity figures are also high in this archipelago. However, the ever blowing sea wind offers some cooling during the warmest part of the day. The temperature of the sea is pleasant all year round and very suitable for swimming.

More climate information
Climate figures are very useful but don’t present a general impression of the climate and the eventual weather circumstances within a certain period. The figures don’t always reflect the chance of wintry weather, extreme heat or hurricanes. That is why we offer useful extra climate information for each month of the year:
