The climate of Lihir Island (Papua New Guinea)
Lihir Island is the largest island of the Lihir Islands and is also
known as Niolam Island. The largest city on the island is Londolovit.
Most of the miners that work on the island live here as well. Besides
the few tourists that visit the local Lakakot Bay resort mining is the
main source of income for the island. The largest river on the island
is the Hurtol. Lihir has a tropical rainforest climate with extremely
high precipitation figures all year round. Because of the large
quantities of rain humidity figures are high as well. However, the
ever blowing sea wind offers some cooling during the hottest days of
the year. The temperature of the sea is very pleasant with
temperatures around 30 degrees Celsius.
