The climate of Funchal (Portugal)
Funchal is the capital of the autonomous region of Madeira and is located in the southern part of the main island Madeira. The city was founded several years after Madeira was discovered at the beginning of the 15th century. Because of this the city has a long history. The many old churches and cathedrals are still a silent witness to this. A casino can be found in the city, this casino was designed by the architect Oscar Niemeyer who is mainly known because of his beautiful buildings in Brazil, such as the Brasilia Cathedral. From Funchal you can take a cable car Monte which is located at a higher altitude.
Funchal has a warm maritime climate also referred to as a subtropical climate. the climate of Funchal and Madeira is strongly influenced by the Atlantic Ocean. Because of this influence extremes in weather are uncommon. However, when a so-called Leste wind comes from Africa temperatures may rise, temperatures above 30 degrees Celsius are not uncommon then. Funchal gets about 600 millimeters of annual precipitation. Most of which falls during the winter.
