The climate of Murmansk (Russia)
Murmansk is located in the north-western part of Russia on the Barents
Sea situated in the European part of the country. Murmansk is situated
on the Kola Peninsula and is the capital of the Murmansk oblast
(administrative division). Murmansk is one of the largest cities built
on permafrost; most of its buildings are built on piles. Despite its
northerly situation Murmansk has a moderate continental climate,
mainly because of the influence of the warm Gulf Stream. Of all the
cities situated this far north Murmansk has one of the mildest
climates because of the Gulf Stream in combination with Murmansk’s
situation on the Barents Sea. The climate is also influenced by the
many winds that blow here. During the summer the sea wind has a
moderating effect on temperatures. However, humidity figures are also
higher. A land wind is responsible for slightly colder temperatures
during the winter. Murmansk gets about 500 millimeters of
precipitation per year; most of which falls during the second part of
the year.

More climate information
Climate figures are very useful but don’t present a general impression
of the climate and the eventual weather circumstances within a certain
period. The figures don’t always reflect the chance of wintry weather,
extreme heat or hurricanes. That is why we offer useful extra climate
information for each month of the year:
