The climate of Alamosa (Colorado
- United States of America)
Alamosa is a small town located in the southern part of Colorado in
the vicinity of the border with the state of New Mexico. The city is
located in Alamosa County in the San Luis Valley. Alamosa is known
because it is located in the vicinity of Great Sand Dunes National
Park and Preserve. This region consists of more than 80 square
kilometers (31 square miles) of sand dunes some of which are more than
200 meters (656 feet) high. Every year more than 200,000 people visit
this park. Mount Blanca Peak is the highest mountain in the vicinity
of Alamosa; this mountain has an altitude of 4,372 meters (15,524
feet). Because of its location at an altitude Alamosa has a moderate
land climate with low precipitation figures all year round. During the
winter most precipitation falls in the form of snow. Winters may be
extremely cold. Temperatures of -30 degrees Celsius (-22.0 degrees
Fahrenheit) are not uncommon. Summers are pleasantly warm, it may even
get hot.
