The climate of Des Moines (Iowa - United States of America)
Des Moines is centrally located in Iowa and is the capital of this state. The city was named after the Des Moines River which flows into the Racoon River near Des Moines. Des Moines is one of the safest cities in the United States. Des Moines is a major center for the insurance industry because many insurance companies have their headquarters here.
Des Moines has a warm continental climate with warm summers and cool winters. Spring and fall are very erratic. In March snowfall can occasionally be recorded while during other years temperatures of 30 degrees Celsius (86 degrees Fahrenheit) can be recorded. Contrasts in weather may be big all year round. This is caused by the presence of large quantities of water. Des Moines gets 2,700 hours of annual sunshine and 900 millimeters of annual precipitation; which is about the national average.

More climate information
Climate figures are very useful but don’t present a general impression of the climate and the eventual weather circumstances within a certain period. The figures don’t always reflect the chance of wintry weather, extreme heat or hurricanes. That is why we offer useful extra climate information for each month of the year:
