The climate of Topeka (Kansas
- United States of America)
Where population figures are concerned Topeka is the fourth city in
Kansas. However, it is the capital of this state. It has been the
capital of Kansas since 1861, about 7 years after the city was
founded. Topeka has a population figure of about 100,000. The city was
constructed in the characteristic American grid pattern. An all time
low in the history of Topeka was the F5 tornado which hit the city on
8 June 1966. This tornado caused 100 million dollars worth of damage
which makes it one of the most destructive tornadoes ever to be
recorded in American history. Topeka has a warm continental climate
(type Dfa according to the Köppen-Geiger climate classification. This
in combination with a flat landscape and an isolated location in the
interior of the United States are ideal circumstances for tornadoes to
form. Topeka is also located in Tornado Alley. A large region with a
risk of tornadoes.

More climate information
Climate figures are very useful but don’t present a general impression
of the climate and the eventual weather circumstances within a certain
period. The figures don’t always reflect the chance of wintry weather,
extreme heat or hurricanes. That is why we offer useful extra climate
information for each month of the year:
