The climate of Frankfort (Kentucky
- United States of America)
Frankfort is located in the northern part of Kentucky and is the
capital of this state. However, Frankfort is not the largest city in
Kentucky. The largest city in Kentucky is Louisville which is located
in the west. Frankfort is a corruption of ‘Frank’s Ford’, a name which
it already had at the end of the 18th century. Frankfort is located at
an altitude of 155 meters above sea level. The Kentucky River flows
through the city. Frankfort is known for several excellent bourbon
distilleries and several historical churches.
Frankfort is located on the spot where a warm maritime climate (type
Cfa) changes into a warm continental climate (type Dfa according to
the Köppen climate classification). Frankfort has four distinct
seasons. Summers are warm and winters are cold. The other two seasons
are much more erratic. Frankfort can record 1,106 millimeters of
annual precipitation which is quite evenly spread out over the year.
Showers may occur all year round. In December and January
precipitation may fall in the form of snow. Snowfall may even occur in
November, February and to a lesser degree in March.

More climate information
Climate figures are very useful but don’t present a general impression
of the climate and the eventual weather circumstances within a certain
period. The figures don’t always reflect the chance of wintry weather,
extreme heat or hurricanes. That is why we offer useful extra climate
information for each month of the year:
