The climate of Aberdeen (South Dakota
- United States of America)
Aberdeen is a small city located in the northeastern part of the state
of South Dakota in Brown County. Aberdeen is located in the James
River Valley approximately 18 kilometers from the river. This region
was originally home to the Sioux Indians until colonists founded
Aberdeen during the second part of the 19th century. During this
period Aberdeen was built around newly developing railroad systems.
Nowadays small industry is the main source of income. The city has its
own hospital. In 2007 a flood destroyed 100 houses. Aberdeen has a
warm continental climate characterized by long and cold winters and
short but warm summers. During the coldest months of winter
temperatures remain below freezing point. Precipitation figures are
highest during the summer causing humidity figures also to be higher
during the summer. Aberdeen is located in Tornado Alley, a region in
which tornadoes are not uncommon.
