The climate of Salt Lake City (Utah
- United States of America)
Salt Lake City is the capital of the state of Utah. It is also the
largest city in the state which is located in Salt Lake Valley, a
large valley with a surface area of 1,300 square kilometers. Salt Lake
City was named after Great Salt Lake, an enormous salt water lake. The
high salt content in the lake is caused by the fact that the lake has
no connection with the sea. When the water evaporates the salt remains
causing salt levels to increase. Salt Lake City has a cold steppe
climate (type BSk according to the Köppen climate classification) with
fairly cool winters, short transitional seasons and long and warm
summers. Salt Lake City gets more than 3,000 hours of annual sunshine
making it one of the sunniest cities in the United States. In July the
sun shines 12.7 hours per day and precipitation figures are extremely
low. July gets 5 days with precipitation on average which leads to a
precipitation figure of only 16 millimeters for July.

Climate figures are very useful but don’t present a general impression
of the climate and the eventual weather circumstances within a certain
period. The figures don’t always reflect the chance of wintry weather,
extreme heat or hurricanes. That is why we offer useful extra climate
information for each month of the year:
