The climate of Herat (Afghanistan)
Herat is located in the north western part of Afghanistan in the Herat
province. It is also the capital of this province. Herat is situated
in the Hari River Valley. Because of its location on the banks of this
river the surrounding area is very fertile. Herat is one of the oldest
cities in Afghanistan. The first records mentioning this city are from
550BC. This can still be seen in and around the city. Herat’s citadel
is probably the most beautiful example. Both Queen Goharshad’s
mausoleum and the Friday Mosque from the 12th century are nothing
less than beautiful.
Because Herat is situated in a lower region than other cities in
Afghanistan it gets less rain, despite the cold steppe climate.
Summers are much more bearable here than in other parts of the
country. Temperatures are just above 30 degrees Celsius on average.
Winters are much colder and subzero temperatures are not uncommon.
During this period most of the precipitation falls, sometimes even in
the form of snow.

More climate information
Climate figures are very useful but don’t present a general impression
of the climate and the eventual weather circumstances within a certain
period. The figures don’t always reflect the chance of wintry weather,
extreme heat or hurricanes. That is why we offer useful extra climate
information for each month of the year:
