The climate of Davis (Antarctica)
Davis is a permanently staffed station situated on the Cooperation Sea in Princess Elizabeth Land. It is one of the most important Antarctic research stations of Australia. This research station was built here in 1956 and researches the ionosphere, meteorology and the biology of mankind and the sea. This part of Antarctica was discovered by a Norwegian whaler in the 1930s. During the summer this part of Antarctica is partially ice and snow free.
Davis has an ice climate with many cold days and low precipitation figures all year round. Because of the warming effect of the Cooperation Sea temperatures remain above freezing point for a few months per year. During local winter temperatures may drop far below freezing point. During this period temperatures of -30 degrees Celsius (-22 degrees Fahrenheit) are not uncommon. It remains dark during this period.

More climate information
Climate figures are very useful but don’t present a general impression of the climate and the eventual weather circumstances within a certain period. The figures don’t always reflect the chance of wintry weather, extreme heat or hurricanes. That is why we offer useful extra climate information for each month of the year:
