The climate of Weipa (Australia)
Weipa is located in the state of Queensland. It was already spotted from sea by a Dutchman in 1606. Unfortunately he never landed so the discovery of Australia went to James Cook. In the beginning Weipa was a missionary post. Later it became a mining city. The largest bauxite mine in the world can be found in this area. The miners and their families live in Weipa. You can visit the mines as a tourist as well. Just south of the city you can see a strange phenomenon: The Weipa shell mounds at the mouth of three local rivers. Weipa is very popular with fishers. Because of its location and rich oceanic life fishing is a great hobby to practice in this area.
Weipa has a tropical climate. Seasons are hard to distinguish. There is an obvious dry season and wet season. During the summer months as much as 2 meters of rain may fall in total. From December to April Weipa has a hurricane season. Powerful storms are not uncommon then.
