The climate of Ypres (Belgium)
Ypres is a unique city just a few kilometers from the French border. Every year many tourists from England, France and Germany come here. Ypres was an important strategic point during WWI; in and around the city huge numbers of soldiers were killed during this period. The second Battle of Ypres (four battles were fought in total) resulted in the deaths of 400,000 soldiers on both sides. During WWI Ypres was completely destroyed. After the war it was restored. The Clothmakers’ Hall today is home to the In Flanders Fields Museum, dedicated to Ypres’ role in WWI. Every night at precisely eight o’ clock the last post is played beneath the Menin Gate by the local fire brigade. In the vicinity of Ypres many war graves and small war museums can be found. Ypres has a moderate maritime climate. Because of the influence of the sea winters never get too cold. During the summer temperatures are around 20 degrees Celsius; showers are not uncommon during summer.
