The climate of Lalibela (Ethiopia)
Lalibela is a small town in the north of Ethiopia not too far away from the Eritrea. Lalibela lies in the Amkara. The town is particularly known for the rockchurches of Lalibela. These special churches have completely been carved out of the rocks. They were built in the 13th century by order of King Lalibela of Ethiopia. Altogether there are 13 of these rock churches in the region around Lalibela. The rockchurches of Lalibela are on the Unesco world heritage list. The town lies at an altitude of more than 2000 meters.
Lalibela has a warm steppe climate that is strongly influenced by the high situation of the town. Due to this higher situation the town has lower temperatures than many other parts of Ethiopia. Throughout the year there is only a small ration of precipitation except in the months of July and August. During these months more than 100 millimeters of precipitation may fall here per day. Owing to this the average temperature during these months is somewhat lower.

More climate information
Climate figures are very useful but don’t present a general impression of the climate and the eventual weather circumstances within a certain period. The figures don’t always reflect the chance of wintry weather, extreme heat or hurricanes. That is why we offer useful extra climate information for each month of the year:
