The climate of Peloponnese (Greece)
Peloponnese is a peninsula south of Greece’s mainland. The peninsula
is separated from the mainland by the Gulf of Corinth and the Gulf of
Aegina (Saronic Gulf). East from Peloponnese the Saronian islands are
situated. The Ionian islands are situated south west of Pelopennesos.
The city of Sparta situated on Peloponnese has played an important
part in history since the Mycenaean period. The remains of the old
city of Olympia can be found here as well. These remains are a Unesco
world heritage site. Peloponnese has a Mediterranean climate with
warm and dry summers and wet and mild winters. During the summer
temperatures are around 30 degrees Celsius. Heat waves with
temperatures above 40 degrees Celsius are not uncommon. In the higher
regions in the north of Pelopennesos temperatures are much lower;
chances of subzero temperatures are higher, just like wintry weather.
In general the weather is much less pleasant here. The eastern part of
the island is much drier than the western part.
Climate information
The figures below are based on long term weather and climate records.
They are an average for the south coasts of Pelopennesos. (Kalamata,
Pylos, Nafplio).
Please, note that local deviations may occur
More climate information
Climate figures are very useful but don’t present a general impression
of the climate and the eventual weather circumstances within a certain
period. The figures don’t always reflect the chance of wintry weather,
extreme heat or hurricanes. That is why we offer useful extra climate
information for each month of the year:
