The climate of Antananarivo (Madagascar)
Antananarivo is the capital of Madagascar. The name of this capital that is almost 400 years old literally means: ‘City of a thousand people’. This is a reference to the number of soldiers that used to guard the city. Antananarivo is situated on a plateau at an altitude of 1,400 meters and is surrounded by mountains. Because of the altitude at which the city is located it has a warm maritime climate instead of a tropical climate. Subzero temperatures do not occur here. Because of the central location on the leeward side of the island it may feel warmer during summer than it actually is. This is caused by the absence of wind. During the summer there is a rainy period in which most of the annual precipitation can be expected.
