The climate of Apeldoorn (the Netherlands)
Apeldoorn is a large city located in the northern part of the
Gelderland province. Apeldoorn is also one of the largest cities on
the Veluwe. The first records of Apeldoorn date back to the 9th
century AD. Apeldoorn flourished during the 16th century because of
the paper industry. Apeldoorn has close connections with the Royal
Dutch family. The Royal Dutch family lived in Apeldoorn until
Wilhelmina became Queen of the Netherlands. The Loo Palace has been a
national museum since 1984. Other attractions in Apeldoorn are the
Apenheul (zoo) and the amusement park Queen Juliana Tower. One of the
biggest festivals in Apeldoorn is “Jazz in the woods” attracting more
than 60,000 visitors every year. In 2009 the Netherlands were appalled
about an attack on the Royal family during a parade on Queens Day. 7
spectators and the perpetrator were killed in this attack. Apeldoorn
has a moderate maritime climate slightly influenced by the North Sea
and the warm Gulf Stream. According to the KNMI (Dutch weather
station) Apeldoorn is one of the wettest cities in the Netherlands.
This also explains why Apeldoorn is situated in one of the greenest
areas in the country. During the summer temperatures are just above 20
degrees Celsius on average. During the winter temperatures are just
above freezing point on average. Longer periods with subzero
temperatures during the night are not uncommon.

More climate information
Climate figures are very useful but don’t present a general impression
of the climate and the eventual weather circumstances within a certain
period. The figures don’t always reflect the chance of wintry weather,
extreme heat or hurricanes. That is why we offer useful extra climate
information for each month of the year:
