The climate of Bergen op Zoom (the Netherlands)
Bergen op Zoom is a medium-sized city located in the most western tip of the North-Brabant province bordering the province of Zeeland. Bergen op Zoom is situated on Lake Markiezaat which is separated from the Oosterschelde by the Oesterdam. The surroundings of Bergen op Zoom have been inhabited since Roman times. In the beginning of the 13th century Bergen op Zoom was granted town privileges. Many remnants of the rich history of Bergen op Zoom can be found in the old city center. Among them are the Markiezenhof, the church of St. Gertrudis with its pepper pot shape spire, the city hall and the Gevangenpoort. The city is known for its tradition of anchovy fishing taking place on Lake Markizaat. Bergen op Zoom has a moderate sea climate influenced by the North Sea. The water in lake Markizaat strongly influences the climate of Bergen op Zoom. Winters are cold. However, longer periods with subzero temperatures are not as common as in the interior. The influence of the water also causes summers to be slightly colder than in the interior.
