The climate of Deventer (the Netherlands)
Deventer is a large town located in the southern part of the Overijssel province, bordering the province of Gelderland. Deventer is among the oldest cities in the Netherlands; the first recordings of Deventer date back to the 9th century AD. At the beginning of the 12th century Deventer was granted town privileges. In the surroundings of Deventer remains of a Roman village were found. Deventer was heavily bombed during WWII. However, several beautiful buildings can still be admired. Among them are: the St. Lebuinus Church, the weighing house which is leaning over off center and the Berg Church. The oldest stone house of the Netherlands, De Proosdij in the Sandrasteeg can be found in Deventer. This house is still in use, the earliest parts date back to around 1130 AD. Every year a book market is held in Deventer, the largest book fair in Europe which attracts more than 100,000 visitors. The Dickens Festival is also an annual event attracting about the same amount of visitors. The ‘Go Ahead Eagles’ soccer club play their home matches in Deventer. Deventer has a moderate maritime climate influenced by the North Sea. However, the influence is smaller in Deventer than in the more westerly located places. This means chances of longer periods with subzero temperatures are higher here. During the summer daytime temperatures are just above 20 degrees Celsius on average.
