The climate of Drenthe (the Netherlands)
Drenthe is one of the northerly located provinces in the Netherlands and is known for its beautiful scenery. Walking through the landscape you may run into the characteristic ‘hunebedden’. These megalithic piles of stone were once used as tombs. The landscape of Drenthe mainly consists of sand and peat moor. The province has many areas of outstanding natural beauty and is very suitable for long bicycle rides and walks enabling you to enjoy the peaceful scenery. The Noorder Dierenpark in Emmen (Zoo) is one of the main attractions. According to many one of the most beautiful zoos in Western Europe. The northerly situation of the province causes temperatures to be slightly lower than the average for the Netherlands. Temperatures are less stable here because the climate is not influenced by the North Sea. During the summer temperatures may be lower in Drenthe than in other places in the Netherlands. Drenthe has a low precipitation figure because it is situated in the interior. This comes in handy during the famous TT motorcycle races in Assen.
