The climate of Enschede (the Netherlands)
Enschede is a large town located in the eastern part of the Overijssel province bordering Germany. Enschede is the largest city in the Overijssel province and the 10th largest municipality in the Netherlands. Enschede is located in the Twente region; Hengelo and Almelo are also part of this region. In this part of the Netherlands ‘Twents’ is spoken, a Dutch Low Saxon dialect. Enschede was founded during early medieval times and was granted town privileges in the 14th century. At the end of the 19th century Enschede flourished, mainly because of the textile industry. In the year 2000 a fireworks disaster took place in Enschede killing 23 people. One of the most important sports events is the Enschede marathon which has been held annually since 1947. Twente FC soccer club play their home matches in Enschede. Despite its location in the interior Enschede has a moderate maritime climate slightly influenced by the warm Gulf Stream. However, this influence is not as strong as in the more westerly located places in the Netherlands. This also means chances of subzero temperatures during the night are higher than in other parts of the country. Precipitation is evenly spread out over the year. Enschede is one of the driest places in the Netherlands.
