The climate of Frisia (the Netherlands)
Friesland or Frisia is a unique province in the northern part of the
Netherlands. The Elfstedentocht (Eleven-city skating tour), Heerenveen
FC soccer club, Fierljeppen (traditional sport in Friesland; lit. far
leaping or pole jumping over ditches) and the Fryske taal or Frisian
language. Friesland has kept a lot of its original character. The
language spoken in Friesland is Westlauwers Frisian or Frisian for
short. This language dates back 2,000 years. In Friesland you can
choose Frisian as a subject in secondary schools and you can even take
a final exam in this course. There even is a Frisian Wikipedia.
Friesland is often used as a starting point for ‘wadlopen’ or walking
across the mudflats of the Frisian shallows or ‘wadden’. This unique
natural area can be walked upon during low tide and offers a very
unique scenery. Because of its northerly location Friesland on the sea
Friesland has a moderate maritime climate with pleasant summers and
reasonably mild winters. Although temperatures are slightly lower in
Friesland than in other parts of the country the latest edition of the
Elfstedentocht dates back to 1997. Longer periods of subzero
temperatures don’t seem to occur as regularly as they did in earlier
times. Even when there is a period of heavy frost it often doesn’t
last long enough to create a thick enough layer of ice for the
Elfstedentocht to start.

More climate information
Climate figures are very useful but don’t present a general impression
of the climate and the eventual weather circumstances within a certain
period. The figures don’t always reflect the chance of wintry weather,
extreme heat or hurricanes. That is why we offer useful extra climate
information for each month of the year:
