The climate of Gelderland (the Netherlands)
Gelderland is a province located in the central eastern part of the country bordering Germany. Gelderland is the largest province in the country and borders the provinces of Limburg, North-Brabant, South-Holland and Utrecht. If you don’t take Lake Veluwe (Veluwemeer) into account Gelderland also borders the province of Flevoland. Arnhem is the capital of the province; the largest city is Nijmegen. Several popular regions are situated within Gelderland: the Veluwe, the Betuwe and the Achterhoek. The open air museum and the GelreDome stadium, both situated in Arnhem attract many visitors every year. The former Royal castle Paleis ‘t Loo is situated in the vicinity of Apeldoorn and is a national museum nowadays. The Annual Four Day Walking Event in Nijmegen is the largest annual event in Gelderland attracting tens of thousands of people from more than 70 countries. Despite its situation in the interior Gelderland has a moderate maritime climate slightly influenced by the warm Gulf Stream. During the winter longer periods with subzero temperatures (during the night) are not uncommon. During these periods precipitation falls in the form of sleet or snow. During the summer temperatures are just above 20 degrees Celsius on average.

The figures don’t always reflect the chance of wintry weather, extreme heat or hurricanes. That is why we offer useful extra climate information for each month of the year:
