The climate of Gouda (the Netherlands)
Gouda is a medium-sized town located in the north eastern part of the South-Holland province. After the bogs had been dug up for peat productio in the 12th century the city was founded. In the 13th century Gouda was granted town privileges. The town is situated on the banks of the rivers Gouwe and Hollandse IJssel. The rich history of the city can still be admired in the center. The old town hall, the weighing house, the Gouwe church, the beautiful house ‘De vier gekroonden’ (The Four Crowned) and the Jerusalem Chapel are all well worth visiting. Gouda is world famous for its cheese. The Gouda Cheese is one of the most consumed cheeses in the world and has to have a milk fat content of at least 48%. During the summer the traditional cheese market is held every week. Gouda has a moderate maritime climate influenced by the Gulf Stream. This influence causes average temperatures to be not as far apart as in the more easterly located places in the Netherlands. During the summer temperatures are just above 20 degrees Celsius on average. Precipitation is evenly spread out over the year; during the coldest days precipitation falls in the form of sleet or snow.
