The climate of Groningen (the Netherlands)
Groningen is the capital of the province of Groningen and it was
proclaimed as the city with the best city center in the Netherlands in
2005. Because of the many students that live here there is always
something to do in Groningen. Several cultural festivals are held:
Noorderslag, Noorderlicht and the poetry festival. The museum of
Groningen is well worth visiting, too. The many cafes and restaurants
create a cosy atmosphere. Many canals flow through the city so a canal
cruise is an excellent way to see this former Hanseatic city. Because
Groningen is located in one of the most northerly situated provinces
of the country temperatures are slightly lower on average than in
other parts of the Netherlands. Groningen has a maritime climate which
means there are few differences in temperature between the seasons.
Because the wind mainly comes from the sea (and the water doesn’t warm
up or cool down rapidly) temperatures don’t drop as rapidly during the
winter as in regions with a continental climate.

More climate information
Climate figures are very useful but don’t present a general impression
of the climate and the eventual weather circumstances within a certain
period. The figures don’t always reflect the chance of wintry weather,
extreme heat or hurricanes. That is why we offer useful extra climate
information for each month of the year:
