The climate of Heerenveen (the Netherlands)
Heerenveen is a town and a municipality located in the southern part
of the province of Friesland. Several small villages are situated
within this municipality; among the largest are: Jubbega, De Knijpe,
Oudeschoot, Nieuwehorne and Oranjewoud. The town was founded in the
16th century on the banks of the Heeresloot. Over the last decades the
city has presented itself as a sports city. The Thialf Ice stadium,
the Abe Lenstra soccer stadium and Sportstad Heerenveen are all
situated within the Heerenveen municipality. Thialf is the most
important ice stadium in the Netherlands, several international speed
skating contests are held here annually. Heerenveen FC soccer club
play their home matches in the Abe Lenstra stadium. Heerenveen has a
moderate maritime climate influenced by its northerly situation and
the warm Gulf Stream. Heerenveen has four distinct seasons. During the
winter temperatures are just above freezing point on average; longer
periods with subzero temperatures (during the night) are not uncommon.
Summers are pleasantly warm with temperatures around 20 degrees
Celsius.
