The climate of Hoofddorp (the Netherlands)
Hoofddorp is a large town located in the southern part of the province of North Holland. Hoofddorp is located in the Haarlemmermeer municipality of which it also is the capital. The largest attraction within this municipality is Schiphol airport. The ‘Stelling van Amsterdam’ (defense line) which is a Unesco world heritage site can also be admired in this municipality. Hoofddorp was founded in the 19th century after the Haarlemmermeer (lake) was impoldered. On the former terrain of the Floriade (World Horticultural Expo) Mystery Land is held. This annual dance event attracts more than 60,000 visitors every year. Hoofddorp has a moderate maritime climate strongly influenced by the North Sea and the warm Gulf Stream. Precipitation is evenly spread out over the year and may be abundant. Longer periods of subzero temperatures may occur, although less frequent than in the more easterly located places in the Netherlands. During the summer temperatures are 20 degrees Celsius on average.
