The climate of Lelystad (the Netherlands)
Lelystad is a medium-sized town in the province of Flevoland of which
it also is the capital. Lelystad is situated on the IJsselmeer (Lake
IJssel) and the Markermeer (Lake Marken). The city, built on reclaimed
land, was founded in 1967 and was named after Cornelis Lely, who
engineered the Afsluitdijk, making the reclamation possible. The first
people moved to Lelystad in 1967, making Lelystad the youngest capital
of a province in the Netherlands. Lelystad offers several attractions:
a replica of the Batavia (17th century ship), the Aviodrome and
Bataviastad. Besides the replica of the Batavia a replica of Hr. Ms.
De Zeven Provinciën (HNMS the Seven provinces) is being built. This
ship is rebuilt making use of old techniques and method. Lelystad has
a moderate sea climate influenced by the warm Gulf Stream. Both the
Ijsselmeer and the Markermeer influence the climate as well. These
influences cause subzero temperatures to be uncommon. However, subzero
temperatures may still occur. Summers are pleasantly warm with
temperatures just above 20 degrees Celsius on average.

More climate information
Climate figures are very useful but don’t present a general impression
of the climate and the eventual weather circumstances within a certain
period. The figures don’t always reflect the chance of wintry weather,
extreme heat or hurricanes. That is why we offer useful extra climate
information for each month of the year:
