The climate of Marken (the Netherlands)
Marken used to be an island in the Markermeer (Lake Marken) and is
part of the province of North Holland. The former island is connected
to the mainland by a dam since 1957. The water in between the mainland
and the former island is called the ‘Gouwzee’. The island was first
inhabited in the 13th century when monks settled here. Nowadays the
peninsula has a population of about 1,800. Marken is an important
tourist attraction. Many people go on a daytrip from Volendam by
ferry. You need a permit to drive your car in Marken. Marken has a
moderate sea climate strongly influenced by its situation in the lake.
This influence causes winters to be slightly warmer than in other
places in the Netherlands. Precipitation figures are lower here as
well. Summers are pleasantly warm with temperatures just above 20
degrees Celsius.

More climate information
Climate figures are very useful but don’t present a general impression
of the climate and the eventual weather circumstances within a certain
period. The figures don’t always reflect the chance of wintry weather,
extreme heat or hurricanes. That is why we offer useful extra climate
information for each month of the year:
