The climate of The province of Groningen (the Netherlands)
The province of Groningen is the most northerly located province in
the Netherlands. This is why the slogan of Groningen is: ‘Groningen is
at the top’. Groningen borders the provinces of Friesland and Drenthe
and the country of Germany in the east. North of the province the
Wadden Sea is situated. The uninhabited islands of Rottumeroog,
Rottumerplaat the Southern dunes and Simonszand which has almost
entirely been reclaimed by the sea. The city of Groningen is the
largest municipality in the province by far. Among other large
municipalities are: Hoogezand-Sappemeer, Delfzijl, Oldambt,
Stadskanaal and Veendam. Besides the beautiful scenery and the Wadden
Sea the museum of Groningen attracts many visitors. Groningen has a
moderate maritime climate strongly influenced by the warm Gulf Stream.
Because Groningen is one of the most northerly situated provinces of
the country temperatures are slightly lower on average than in other
parts of the Netherlands. During the summer temperatures are just
above 20 degrees Celsius on average. During the winter temperatures
are just above freezing point. During this period longer periods with
subzero temperatures (during the night) are not uncommon.

More climate information
Climate figures are very useful but don’t present a general impression
of the climate and the eventual weather circumstances within a certain
period. The figures don’t always reflect the chance of wintry weather,
extreme heat or hurricanes. That is why we offer useful extra climate
information for each month of the year:
