The climate of Schiermonnikoog (the Netherlands)
Schiermonnikoogis one of the smallest of the seven West Frisian
islands. Only one village is located on the island, also named
Schiermonnikoog. Many bicycle tracks and footpaths can be enjoyed on
the island. Tourists are not allowed to bring their cars to the
island. The scenery is beautiful; the entire island is a National
Park. Schiermonnikoog is always shifting. Due to the combined effect
of current and tides the sea erodes parts of the island on one side
and deposits silt on the other side. Because of this phenomenon the
entire island moves east. Schiermonnikoog has a maritime climate. The
influence of the sea is much stronger here than on the mainland.
Clouds dissolve rapidly here, so there is little rainfall. However,
the weather may be very bleak during autumn and winter. During the
autumn the sea is still warm, this causes large amounts of rain to
fall on the island during this period. During the summer temperatures
are very pleasant. Especially in the dunes on the leeward side
temperatures may rise. However, the ever blowing sea wind offers some
cooling.

More climate information
Climate figures are very useful but don’t present a general impression
of the climate and the eventual weather circumstances within a certain
period. The figures don’t always reflect the chance of wintry weather,
extreme heat or hurricanes. That is why we offer useful extra climate
information for each month of the year:
