The climate of Sneek (the Netherlands)
Sneek is located in the central western part of Friesland in the
municipality of Súdwest-Fryslân on the Sneekermeer (Lake Sneek). The
city was founded in the 10th century and was granted town privileges
in the 13th century. Sneek is one of the eleven cities during the
elfstedentocht (eleven city skating tour). The Sneeker Waterpoort
(Gate) is the most famous building in Sneek, many replicas of this
building can be found all over the world. Besides the Elfstedentocht
Sneek is famous for the Sneek week. This annual event has been
organized since 1934. Nowadays it is organized by the Royal
watersports association Sneek. About 1,000 people participate in this
event; the Sneek week attracts more than 100,000 visitors every year.
Sneek has a moderate maritime climate with few extremes. This is
mainly because of the influence of the North Sea and the warm Gulf
Stream. The last time the Elfstedentocht was held was in 1997; this is
because the climate is getting milder here. During the summer
temperatures are just above 20 degrees Celsius. Precipitation is
evenly spread out over the year; during the coldest days of the year
precipitation falls in the form of sleet or snow.

More climate information
Climate figures are very useful but don’t present a general impression
of the climate and the eventual weather circumstances within a certain
period. The figures don’t always reflect the chance of wintry weather,
extreme heat or hurricanes. That is why we offer useful extra climate
information for each month of the year:
