The climate of South Holland (the Netherlands)
South Holland is a densely populated province in the western part of
the Netherlands on the North Sea. The capital of the province of South
Holland is The Hague; the largest city is Rotterdam. South Holland
borders the provinces of Zeeland, North Holland, North Brabant and
Gelderland. Besides the main land the province consists of the former
islands of Rozenburg, IJsselmonde, Voorne-Putten, Hoeksche Waard, the
island of Dordrecht, Goeree Overflakkee and the island of Tiengemeten.
Together with several neighboring provinces South Holland forms the
green heart of the Netherlands. Rotterdam is the largest port in the
Netherlands and Europe. South Holland has a moderate maritime climate
strongly influenced by the North Sea. Because of this extremes in
temperatures are uncommon. However, extremes may occur. Longer periods
with subzero temperatures do not occur as frequently as in the more
easterly located places. During the summer temperatures are slightly
lower than you would expect, this is caused by the influence of the
North Sea. Precipitation is evenly spread out over the year. During
periods with subzero temperatures precipitation falls in the form of
snow.

More climate information
Climate figures are very useful but don’t present a general impression
of the climate and the eventual weather circumstances within a certain
period. The figures don’t always reflect the chance of wintry weather,
extreme heat or hurricanes. That is why we offer useful extra climate
information for each month of the year:
