The climate of Urk (the Netherlands)
The former island of Urk has been a village and a municipality in the
province of Flevoland since the Zuiderzee was impolderd. Urk is one of
the most religious municipalities in the Netherlands. Bear in mind
that most public places will be closed on Sundays and Christian
holidays. Urk has the largest fishing fleet in the Netherlands. Most
of the people from Urk work in the fishing industry. There is a
monument in the harbor with the names of all the fishermen who have
been lost at sea. Urk has a moderate maritime climate influenced by
the Ijsselmeer (Lake Ijssel) and the warm Gulf Stream. Winters are
cold with temperatures just above freezing point. Extremes in
temperatures do occur; during the winter of 1963 the Ijsselmeer was
completely frozen. Summers are pleasantly warm with temperatures
around 20 degrees Celsius.

More climate information
Climate figures are very useful but don’t present a general impression
of the climate and the eventual weather circumstances within a certain
period. The figures don’t always reflect the chance of wintry weather,
extreme heat or hurricanes. That is why we offer useful extra climate
information for each month of the year:
