The climate of Zeeland (the Netherlands)
Zeeland is a province in the south-western part of the Netherlands.
The entire province consists of islands and peninsulas. The capital of
the province of Zeeland is Middelburg. The largest municipality in the
province is Terneuzen. The text on the coat of arms of Zeeland states:
‘Luctor et Emergo’ which means I struggle and emerge. This is very
appropriate for a province that has always been engaged an in
endlessly ongoing fight against flooding. Zeeland has a moderate
maritime climate strongly influenced by the North Sea. Summers are
pleasant, but not too hot. Winters are mild with temperatures hardly
ever dropping below freezing point. A moderate maritime climate is
characterized by a large number of rainy days per month. The warm
current in the Atlantic Ocean also strongly influences the climate
here. During the summer the temperature of the sea is slightly higher
on average here than in other coastal areas. During the winter the
average temperature of the sea is slightly lower. This is because the
sea is quite shallow here so the sun has a stronger influence.

More climate information
Climate figures are very useful but don’t present a general impression
of the climate and the eventual weather circumstances within a certain
period. The figures don’t always reflect the chance of wintry weather,
extreme heat or hurricanes. That is why we offer useful extra climate
information for each month of the year:
